With 81.8 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state of the European Union economy and second most populous nation (after Russia), and home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide. Germany is a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. Germany is well known for its history during World War II, but modern Germany has much to offer the international rugby traveler. Whether you are interested in its rich culture or you just want to experience the Oktoberfest, Germany will prove to be an exciting and interesting adventure. Experience the majestic beauty of castles and palaces, explore fascinating museums, or delve into the music of some of the most famous German composers. Explore the wine and beer festivals and learn what Germany has to offer! GERMFLAG

While German rugby is still growing, social 7's tournaments and matches with American military bases have been popular amonst North Americans. Regardless of the National Team, Germany proves to be a sporting powerhouse. The national soccer team, or "die Mannschaft" ("The Team") as it's known there, has dominated European soccer and the World Cup. Germany is historically one of the three most successful national soccer teams at international competitions, having won a total of three World Cups and three European Championships and were hosts to the World Cup in 2006. The Germany Women's national soccer team is also considered among the world's best, reaching the quarter finals in the 2011 Women's World Cup and having won the past 4 European Championships for women.

Bavaria, the southernmost German state, and its capital Munich, stand apart from the rest of the country. The difference includes a more relaxed lifestyle. Visitors linger for hours in beer gardens, eating, singing and meeting new friends. Munich hosted both the 1972 Olympics and '74 World Cup, returned to the international stage in 2006 when Germany again hosted the World Cup.

Cologne is a short trip away, the 2000-year-old city's beauty is both natural (it sits on the Rhein River) and manmade (the riverfront Alstadt is dominated by the spectacular Dom towers). Rugby teams traveling here are sure to enjoy Cologne's rich mix of ancient history and modern sport.

Germany program highlights and sights:
