| Belgium is a country split in two by a language boundary. In Flanders, north of this boundary, Flemish is spoken -- a variety of Dutch with many regional variants. South of the border, in the Walloon region, people speak a Belgian variety of French, also with many local dialects. The national capital, Brussels, is enclaved within the Flemish region. Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the EU's headquarters, as well as those of several other major international organizations such as NATO, and this smaller country recently celebrated its 175th anniversary of independence. Soccer holds a central position in Belgian life. Belgium's World Cup appearance record reflects the unusual depth of soccer talent for a country of this size. The country qualified for six successive World Cups from 1982 through 2002. Visiting a soccer league match is like meeting friends. Winning is great, but losing is not the end of the world. No wonder so many international youth and college soccer teams from abroad enjoy visiting this friendly corner of Europe.
Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the administrative center of the European Union. This has earned the city the title of the Capital of Europe.
